Monthly leftover after essentials
$1,800
Savings after this purchase
$2,200
This fits within your monthly leftover and keeps your savings buffer intact.
How do I know if I can afford it?
Compare the price against two numbers: your monthly leftover after essentials, and what your savings would become after paying for it. If either check leaves you without a buffer, the purchase is not affordable yet.
What is a worked example?
With $4,000 income, $2,200 in essentials, $3,000 in savings and an $800 purchase, your monthly leftover is $1,800, comfortably above the $800 price, and your savings after the purchase would remain $2,200, still equal to a full month of essentials. This purchase fits.
Why check savings, not just income?
A purchase can look affordable from income alone but still be risky if it drains the emergency fund you would need for a real crisis. Checking both income and savings gives a fuller, more honest picture before you buy.
FAQs
How do I know if I can afford something?
Compare the purchase price to what is left after essentials and to your savings buffer. If paying for it would use your emergency fund, require debt, or leave you unable to cover essentials, it is not affordable right now.
How much emergency savings should I keep before a big purchase?
Most guidance suggests keeping at least three to six months of essential expenses in savings before making a large discretionary purchase, so an emergency does not force you into debt.
What if I have to use debt to buy it?
If a purchase only fits your budget by using debt, it generally is not affordable yet. Waiting and saving toward it keeps the full cost visible instead of hidden inside future interest payments.
Does this apply to big purchases only?
No, the same three-part check, income, essentials and savings, works for everyday decisions too. Running the numbers before you buy turns a feeling into a clear yes or no.
