Emergency Fund Calculator
Your emergency fund is your buffer against surprises. Answer: how much should I save, and how long will it take at my current pace?
How much emergency fund do I need?
Start with $1,000 to $2,000 as a starter fund, then build toward 3 to 6 months of essential expenses once destructive debt is under control. Someone with unstable income or a single-income household should target the higher end.
Worked example
If your essential expenses are $2,500 a month and you target 4 months of coverage, your goal is $10,000. Starting from $500 saved and adding $200 a month, it takes about 48 months, or faster if you increase your monthly contribution.
FAQs
How much emergency fund do I need?
A starter emergency fund of $1,000 to $2,000 covers most small surprises. A full emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of essential expenses protects you against job loss or a major crisis.
Where should I keep my emergency fund?
Keep it in a separate, easily accessible savings account, not invested in the market, so it is available immediately without risk of loss when you need it.
Should I save or pay off debt first?
Most plans build a small starter fund first, then attack high interest debt, then return to build the full 3 to 6 month fund once destructive debt is gone.
